A-Rod homers; awaits likely drug penalty from MLB

NEW YORK (AP) ? Alex Rodriguez feels singled out ? by Major League Baseball in its drug investigation and by his New York Yankees.

"There are a lot of layers," he said after homering Friday night for the Double-A Trenton Thunder in his return from a leg injury. "I will say this: There is more than one party that benefits from me not ever stepping back on the field. And that's not my teammates and it's not the Yankee fans."

With a lengthy suspension looming, the New York Yankees star hit a two-run homer to left in the third inning of a 6-2 win over the Reading Fightin Phils.

Rodriguez is among 14 players facing discipline in MLB's Biogenesis drug investigation, and suspensions are expected on Monday. While others are expected to receive 50-game bans, Rodriguez's penalty figures to be far harsher ? perhaps through the 2014 season or even a lifetime ban.

"I think it is pretty self-explanatory. I think that is the pink elephant in the room," he said. "I think we all agree that we want to get rid of PEDs. That's a must. I think all the players, we feel that way. But when all this stuff is going on in the background and people are finding creative ways to cancel your contract and stuff like that, I think that's concerning for me, it's concerning for present ? and I think it should be concerning for future players, as well."

Coming back from hip surgery and a quadriceps injury, A-Rod hopes to rejoin the Yankees for Monday's series opener at the Chicago White Sox, what would be his first time back in the major leagues since last October.

"I think it's possible," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said in San Diego.

    Rodriguez is counting on it.

"Unless I get hit by lightning, and these days you never know," he said.

"I am mentally prepared to play for five more years," he said, later adding, "It's not time for me to hang it up. I have a lot more fight in me."

But he might not get back to the Yankees any time soon because of his alleged connection to the closed anti-aging clinic that's been accused of distributing banned performance-enhancing drugs. All-Stars Nelson Cruz, Jhonny Peralta of Detroit and Everth Cabrera of San Diego also may be disciplined.

Cruz hit a tying, two-run homer Friday in Texas' 8-3 win at Oakland.

"It's still hard to deal with it," he said. "You have to be able to separate it."

Many are expected to follow the example set by Milwaukee's Ryan Braun last month and accept penalties without a challenge before an arbitrator. First-time offenders who challenge suspensions can continue to play until their appeals are decided.

"Let's just get it over with," Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said.

The Yankees expect A-Rod to be accused of recruiting other athletes for the clinic, attempting to obstruct MLB's investigation, and not being truthful with MLB in the past.

Baseball has been attempting to gain a suspension through at least 2014 and has threatened a possible lifetime ban. Negotiations over Rodriguez's penalty are likely to go through the weekend, with the 38-year-old resisting such a lengthy stretch on the sidelines.

He seems to think the Yankees are trying to keep him off the field. While he remains on the disabled list, New York is reimbursed for his $28 million salary by insurance.

Rodriguez seemed to be on the verge of rejoining the Yankees before the leg injury last month. New York assigned him to Trenton for two games and has not said where he'll go afterward.

It is not clear whether Commissioner Bud Selig would attempt to use provisions of baseball's labor contract to prevent Rodriguez from playing until arbitrator Fredric Horowitz rules on an appeal.

Lawyers from management and the union plus attorneys for individual players spent Friday working their way through the many issues resulting from mass suspensions.

For instance: Will there be different treatment for minor leaguers depending whether they are on 40-man rosters.

Under the drug rules, 40-man roster players serving a 50-game suspension would have major league games in September count as time served after the minor league seasons end. Seattle catcher Jesus Montero, Mets outfielder Cesar Puello and Baltimore third baseman Danny Valencia might be in that group.

But that time wouldn't count for players not on 40-man rosters, whose suspensions would spill into 2014. Yankees outfielder Fernando Martinez could be in that category.

For many players, the damage to their images already has been inflicted. Rodriguez has faced fan taunting since 2009, when he said he used PEDs while with Texas from 2001-03.

Nike Inc. confirmed Friday that it no longer has a relationship with Braun, the 2011 NL MVP who accepted a 65-game suspension last month that ended the Milwaukee outfielder's season.

    ___

AP Sports Writers Tom Canavan in Trenton, Andrew Seligman in Chicago and Bernie Wilson in San Diego contributed to this report.

Ranking the 10 Most Underrated Guards of 2013-14 College Basketball

Duke?s Quinn Cook is an outstanding player who deserves more props than he is currently receiving.

As a freshman, Cook was an irregularly used as a backup who was never at full capacity because of injuries.

The most notable of his first-year stats was his assist-to-turnover ratio, which was an outrageous 3.5 (63 assists with only 18 turnovers).

Last year as a sophomore, the 6?1? PG from D.C. locked down the starting job, averaging a more-than-solid 11.7 points, 3.8 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game.

In most cases, those are the kinds of numbers that help you stand out and get recognized. However, Cook was no better than the No. 4 (maybe No. 5) option in last year?s Blue Devils attack. When you play with the likes of seniors Mason Plumlee, Seth Curry and Ryan Kelly, what do you expect?

Duke?s 2013-14 roster has plenty of star power. All-everything freshman Jabari Parker arrives and Mississippi State-transfer Rodney Hood?will now be eligible. Rasheed Sulaimon and Andre Dawkins return to Coach K?s backcourt.

Cook is a vital part to the Blue Devils' success in the upcoming season, but the question lingers: To what degree will he continue to labor in relative obscurity?

Education is key to preventing 3 200 SA women?s deaths per year

African countries must increase the availability of contraceptives, and also educate girls and women about the importance of family planning, if they are serious about reducing maternal and child deaths.

This was the take-home message at the three-day International Conference on Maternal, Newborn and Child Health in Africa held in Ekurhuleni, which ended today.

The conference hosted by the African Union (AU), in partnership with the South African government, acknowledged that there has been improvement in maternal and child mortality rates in Africa in the past few years, but more still needs to be done as it the continent has the highest maternal mortality ratio in the world.

The latest official statistics show that 165 000 women died because of pregnancy or childbirth-related complications in Africa in 2011, of which 3 200 were in South Africa.

Although maternal deaths decreased by 46% between 1990 and 2011, AU chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said: ?It was unacceptable that so many African women died while giving life.?

She called on countries to increase the availability of and improve family planning choices, and the health and nutrition status of mothers.

?The health status of a child and its odds for survival and prospects to grow and develop, does not begin at birth but way before with family planning. What we need to do is to ensure that women have choices, have universal access to family planning services and are educated about when they should have children, the spacing of their children and the choice on the number of children they have,? she said.

Dlamini-Zuma explained that this can be achieved by empowering women, strengthening health systems, entrenching women?s reproductive rights and the rights of children.

Dr Babatunde Osotimehin, executive director at the United Nations Population Fund, agrees: ?Gender inequality and women?s low social status continues to affect women?s health and access to and use of family planning services.

?We have the tools and the knowledge to reduce maternal and child mortality. All we need to do is hold ourselves accountable and work together to promote children and women?s rights and we can bring an end to preventable maternal and child deaths,? he said.

The conference was also used as a platform to remind AU member states that there were only 900 days left before the target date for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which includes reducing maternal and child deaths.

Most African countries, including South Africa, are unlikely to meet MDGs relating to maternal and child mortality.

South Africa committed to decreasing the maternal mortality rate from 150 per 100 000 in 1998 to 38 per 100 000 by 2015.

However, out of every 100 000 women who fell pregnant in 2011, 310 died because of pregnancy or childbirth-related complications. Hypertension, HIV and excessive bleeding were found to be the main causes of death.

Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said the country was doing all it could to reduce maternal deaths, but ?HIV, hypertension and haemorrhage were hindering progress?.

?These three factors are the main cause of death in pregnant women. If we can deal with them, we can reduce the number of women who die due to pregnancy-related complications,? he said.

60 troops fired after sex-assault review

    sexassault

Washington, DC? ? The Pentagon has fired 60 troops working as sexual assault counselors, recruiters or drill instructors after investigators found they had committed violations ranging from alcohol-related offenses to child abuse and sexual assault.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel ordered the review after a Pentagon report in May estimated 26,000 troops had been sexually assaulted in 2012, a 35% increase since 2010, according to USAToday.

Records of at least 35,000 troops have been screened or are under review, according to the services.

Each of the services appears to have interpreted Hagel?s directive differently. The Marines screened recruiters, for example, against a public database, while the Army considered criminal records for sexual assault, child abuse and alcohol-related offenses.

The Army has suspended 55 soldiers, according to figures compiled through mid-July, said George Wright, an Army spokesman. In all, it is looking at 20,000 recruiters, sexual-assault counselors and drill instructors and expects to have completed its screening by Oct. 1. More suspensions could occur as the review continues.

It is unclear whether the suspended soldiers have been discharged, Wright said, or if they can be reassigned to other units.

Google's Moto X announced, gives us our second look at next generation iPhone 5S competitor

Google's Motorola subsidiary has just announced the brand-new Moto X, which they somehow let Verizon spoil last week with their incredibly similar new Droid announcement, but which is interesting enough that it certainly deserved the second, more encompassing look. Phil Nickinson of Android Central has already gotten a Moto X hands-on and here are his first impressions:

The Moto X is the first phone designed and built from scratch since Google acquired Motorola. And the end result is a phone that's as simple as it is complex. Its design is as understated as it is attractive. There have been so many assumptions about what the first Googlerola phone should be. It should be "Pure Google." It should have NASA-level hardware. It should have at least as many features as the droid line.

What Motorola's done is taken solid hardware and attractive design and married it to a fairly stock version of Android ? with some interesting features thrown in, as well as a number of customization options. It's coming to five U.S. carriers in a few weeks and worldwide later, retailing for $199 on contract.

It's not yet the Google+ Now phone of my dreams, the natural-language-first interface that brings the Iron Man movie's Jarvis one step closer to life, but it's certainly a great sounding phone. The customization options are interesting, if a little cheesy - it looks like you can get it in wood veneer! That's never worked for anyone before, not Dell, and not case makers, but Motorola seems to have a solid enough device here that the gimmick shouldn't matter. It's not lipstick on a pig, it's frosting on a cake.

Google will likely have a new Nexus (4?) later this year as well, and perhaps Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie (seriously?) to go with it. Combined, it'll be an interesting new generation of competition for Apple. We've already seen iOS 7, which really is revolutionary in its take on dynamic, gameified interface, but if Apple holds to pattern, they're in a "tock" cycle for hardware this year. Will an iPhone 5S be perceptively different enough to excite consumers, even with fingerprint scanners, better cameras, and other, less obvious enhancements?

Check out Android Central's full Moto X coverage and then you tell me.

Who will be Penn State football's defensive MVP?: Penn State question of the day

    Adrian Amos 2012 at Nebraska

Penn State's Adrian Amos lays a hard hit on Nebraska wide receiver Jamal Turner in the Nittany Lions' 32-23 loss to Nebraska. (JOE HERMITT, The Patriot-News)

The Nittany Lions open camp on Monday and Bill O'Brien spoke Thursday about what he likes with his defense.

We've looked at and given you a chance to project who you think the team's offensive MVP will be so now it's time for the defense.

The team lacks depth at linebacker but Mike Hull will finally step into a full-time starting role. The player whose workout numbers have soared through the roof as one of the team's strongest athletes could also be one of the defense's brightest stars.

There's also senior defensive tackle DaQuan Jones who will no longer have former Nittany Lion Jordan Hill to help him out. At 6-foot-3 and 318 lbs., the Lions are waiting for Jones to become the next interior force, much like Hill and Devon Still were before him.

Penn State's secondary will feature a few young defensive backs but there's also the versatile Adrian Amos who can play safety, corner and perhaps receive some looks at linebacker. Amos is one of the Lions' top projected players to excel in the NFL and if you're trying to see just how productive he is, notice how often quarterbacks shy throwing near his area.

Defensive end Deion Barnes took home the honor as the Big Ten's Freshman of the Year last season and can expect to face a lot of double teams this season. He led the team with six sacks last year but how his teammates step up alongside him will better project just how effective he will be despite receiving extra attention.

Plenty of talent to choose from on the defense, so which player do you think will be the team's defensive MVP?

Restaurant Road Trip: Dos Hermanos II

When you go out to a restaurant, there are several things you may be looking for.

Some of the most common are a friendly atmosphere, fresh food, and good service.

Dos Hermanos II in Fairmont aims to offer all of that.

"What our goal is to offer smiles from the beginning all of the way to the end of the restaurant. We want 100 percent satisfaction, great times, and just to have fun," said Mike Carkin, co-owner.

Dos Hermanos II is one of two restaurants owned by two brothers.

The original Dos Hermanos is located in New Martinsville.

"We were searching for a new location to open another one. We have very good business right now and good support at the first one," said Donato Turcios, co-owner. "We searched for different places and we found this one. We like it."

    Its customers like it, too.

They said it's different from other Mexicans restaurants for several reasons.

"The things I like the most are the freshness of the food, the ability to walk in and feel as if you're welcome because they know you personally, and not too much cheese," said Don Tobin, customer.

When I asked about the restaurant's biggest seller, the answer was instant.

"Everything on the grill. We have grilled fajitas, burritos, grilled steak. The especial de la cucina is grilled too," Turcios said. "All of the grilled stuff, they love it.

"The ACM, I would think. It is shrimp and steak served over rice. That's a very popular item," Carkin said.

Regular customers said they never leave the restaurant disappointed.

"I was stationed in Texas. I'm a retired military officer and I've really learned to appreciate Mexican food down there. One thing I like is that they don't over cheese the food," Tobin said.

Dos Hermanos II said it really prides itself on its great service and its bold flavors.

"Our menu is good. The food is a little different. It tastes better," Turcios said.

"Bold flavors. That's one of our major selling points. We have really bold tastes and they are different then other Mexican restaurants," Carkin agreed.

U.S. economy likely lost step in second; expected to regain pace

    By Lucia Mutikani

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. economic growth likely slowed sharply in the second quarter, but it is poised to regain momentum as the burden brought on by belt-tightening in Washington eases.

Gross domestic product probably grew at a 1.0 percent annual rate, a step back from the first-quarter's 1.8 percent pace, according to a Reuters survey of economists. Some said growth could be even weaker, with forecasts ranging as low as 0.4 percent.

Tighter fiscal policy, a slow pace of inventory accumulation and sluggish global demand, which has dampened exports, are seen as having hobbled the economy in the April-June period.

"The economy only had a couple of legs to stand on, consumers and housing, but conditions are falling into place for a stronger second half of the year," said Ryan Sweet, a senior economist at Moody's Analytics in West Chester Pennsylvania.

The Commerce Department will release the second-quarter GDP report at 8:30 a.m. EDT on Wednesday.

If economists' forecasts are proved right, it would mark a third straight quarter of GDP growth below 2 percent, a pace that normally would be too soft to bring down unemployment.

But given the backward-looking nature of the GDP report, it is not likely to have any impact on monetary policy.

Federal Reserve officials, wrestling with a decision on the future of their $85 billion per month bond-buying program, will probably nod to the second quarter's weakness when they wind-up a two-day meeting on Wednesday. But they are also expected to chalk up much of the weakness to temporary factors, such as the drag from fiscal policy and a smaller build-up of business inventories.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said last month that the central bank was likely to start curtailing the bond purchases later this year and would probably bring them to a complete halt by the middle of 2014, if the economy progressed as expected.

"Even with a relatively soft GDP number, the Fed still appears confident in their outlook and the prospects of the labor market going forward," said Sam Bullard, a senior economist at Wells Fargo Securities in Charlotte, North Carolina. "It looks like they are positioned to make their announcement, come late this year."

    SILVER LINING IN REVISIONS?

While U.S. financial markets have already priced in a weak second-quarter GDP reading, comprehensive revisions to the data might present a silver lining for the economy.

The government has implemented some changes in how it calculates GDP. For example, research and development spending will now be treated as investment, and defined benefit pension plans will be measured on an accrual basis, rather than as cash.

Economists say these changes will not only reveal a bigger economy and a higher rate of saving, but they could lead to an upward revision of 2012 growth as well.

"There's a distinct possibility that real GDP growth over the past four quarters will be upgraded," said Maury Harris, chief economist at UBS in New York.

"In addition, history suggests that the originally published personal saving rate will be revised up, which would calm some concerns about under-saving consumers holding back their upcoming expenditures."

Economists said the revisions would probably narrow the gap between a relatively strong pace of job gains and weak growth, a misalignment they said the Fed was monitoring.

Higher taxes, as Washington tries to shrink the government's budget deficit, likely constrained consumer spending in the second quarter, keeping the economy on an anemic growth pace.

Consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of U.S. economic activity, is expected to have slowed to a less than 2 percent pace after rising at a 2.6 percent rate in the first quarter.

That could bring the contribution from consumer spending far below the 1.8 percentage points it added in the first quarter.

With domestic demand tepid, businesses likely tried to keep their inventories from bulging. Inventory accumulation is expected to have made only a modest contribution to growth.

Other details of the report are expected to show exports weighed on the economy as demand weakened in Europe and China. Trade is expected to have subtracted more than half-a-percentage point from GDP growth in the second quarter.

Good news is expected from the housing sector, with double-digit growth forecast for spending on residential construction. Housing, which triggered the 2007-09 recession, is growing strongly, helping to keep the economic recovery anchored.

Business spending on equipment and software likely continued a steady march upward, with investment in nonresidential structures rebounding from a decline in the first quarter.

Government spending, however, is expected to have contracted for a third straight quarter, largely because of the across-the-board spending cuts in Washington.

Senate presses ahead with media shield law

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Senate is pressing ahead on legislation to protect reporters and the news media, toughening rules on subpoenaing phone records and requiring advanced notice of requests for information.

The Judiciary Committee is scheduled to meet Thursday to begin considering legislation sponsored by Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., a key proponent of a federal media shield law who was unsuccessful four years ago. The panel is expected to begin work on the measure ? it has yet to draw sponsors or opponents ? but final action on the 21-page bill is likely after Congress' August recess.

The effort comes after the disclosure earlier this year that the Justice Department secretly subpoenaed almost two months of telephone records for 21 phone lines used by reporters and editors for The Associated Press and secretly used a warrant to obtain some emails of a Fox News journalist. The AP received no advanced warning.

A draft of Schumer's measure would incorporate many of the changes proposed by Attorney General Eric Holder in July. Criticism over the collection of the material without any notice to the news organizations prompted President Barack Obama to order Holder to review the department's policy.

Holder's revised guidelines called for the government to give advance notice to the news media about subpoena requests for reporters' phone records unless the attorney general determines such notice would pose a clear and substantial threat to the investigation. Search warrants for a reporter's email would only apply when the individual is the focus of a criminal investigation for conduct not connected to ordinary newsgathering.

The Schumer bill makes clear that before the government asks a news organization to divulge sources it first must go to a judge, who would supervise any subpoenas or court orders for information. Such orders would be limited, if possible, "in purpose, subject matter and period of time covered so as to avoid compelling disclosure of peripheral, nonessential or speculative information."

Holder's revised guidelines do not call for a judge to be involved before the government asks a news organization to divulge sources. However, the guidelines call for a new standing News Media Review Committee to advise the attorney general on such requests.

Reporters must be notified within 45 days of a request, a period that could be extended another 45 days but no more.

In the AP story that triggered one of the leak probes, the news organization reported that U.S. intelligence had learned that al-Qaida's Yemen branch hoped to launch a spectacular attack using a new, nearly undetectable bomb aboard a U.S.-bound airliner around the anniversary of Osama bin Laden's death.

In the Fox News story, reporter James Rosen reported that U.S. intelligence officials had warned Obama and senior U.S. officials that North Korea would respond to a U.N. Security Council resolution condemning nuclear tests with another nuclear test.

In mid-July, Schumer and Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina were joined by five other senators in pushing for some type of legislation. Proponents of the effort were Sens. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., Jon Tester, D-Mont., Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., and Roy Blunt, R-Mo.

One potential issue is the definition of a reporter in the aftermath of WikiLeaks, the website that exposed U.S. classified information leaked by Army Pfc. Bradley Manning.

The bill's definition covers four pages and defines the individual as a person "with the primary intent to investigate events and procure material in order to disseminate to the public news or information concerning local, national or international events or other matters of public interest," collects the information by conducting interviews and directly observing events, and has the intent of gathering news.

EADS board discusses reorganization, rebranding plans

By Tim Hepher and Cyril Altmeyer

PARIS (Reuters) - The board of EADS gathered on Tuesday to vote on a reorganization that will see the European aerospace group adopt the name of its main Airbus subsidiary, industry sources said.

By retrenching to three units instead of four, the restyled "Airbus Group" aims to sharpen efforts to double its margins by mid-decade to catch up with rival Boeing and get a lift from one of Europe's best known brands.

Barring a request by the company's board to ask for more time to review the changes, the reorganization will be announced on Wednesday with first-half earnings that are expected to show flat operating income at the main Airbus plane making division.

Chief Executive Tom Enders launched a strategy review after failing to secure a merger with UK defense company BAE Systems and instead winning a shake-up in governance last year.

The main change will involve merging the defense and space divisions into one Munich-based unit, called Airbus Defence & Space. This will also incorporate Airbus Military, the Spanish operation which builds refueling tankers and army transporters.

A potential web site, airbus-defence.com, was registered a few days ago, according to online domain records.

Eurocopter, the world's largest civil rotary aircraft maker, will stay as a separate unit and will become Airbus Helicopters.

The core Airbus plane making business, which makes up close to 70 percent of group revenues, should keep its one-word name despite earlier suggestions that it might gain a longer title to drive home the fact that it is the unit of a larger group.

Analysts say the changes are expected to cut some jobs.

"Regrouping defence activities under one umbrella would have the merit of making the target of 10 percent EBIT margin by 2015 more credible in the non-Airbus divisions," said Kepler Cheuvreux analyst Christophe Menard in a note.

"There are still hurdles on the way, as the regrouping entails some social costs, needing government validation."

Analysts say the rebranding is likely to make it easier to integrate nationally focused activities, especially in defence, but will leave little separation between the parent and main subsidiary, sharing both a name and headquarters city, Toulouse.

The Airbus brand takes Europe's largest aerospace company back to early European efforts to cater to demand for affordable mass travel - which still dominates the company's order volumes today, following the dramatic rise of low-cost carriers.

"The airbus" was originally a generic name given to European efforts to build a people-carrier jet some 50 years ago and was first registered as part of a company name in Germany in 1965.

EADS - originally European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co - came onto the scene as the result of a merger of French, German and Spanish assets in 2000, including most of Airbus.

The founders of EADS had considered adopting the name Airbus during talks that led to the merger, according to participants, but were unable to do so because Airbus was at that time partly owned by British Aerospace, which later became BAE Systems.

On its 10th anniversary in 2010, EADS dreamed up a new name for the group - "Aeria" - but abandoned it and the name was forgotten, its former communications chief blogged this week.

Facebook begins rolling out embedded posts, starting with major media partners

Facebook begins rolling out embedded posts

Facebook has plenty of options for integrating with sites across the web. In fact, its share and like buttons were very much at the forefront of the social widget revolution. But, while its friends at Instagram have been enjoying embeddable posts since early this month, Facebook has had no comparable capabilities. That small, but obvious, advantage enjoyed by Twitter and Vine is finally disappearing, however. Today the popular social network and personal data gold mine unveiled Embedded Posts, which enable anyone to place interactive widgets on a page that contain images, links, update text and even clickable hashtags. Obviously, you can also like a post or follow the source account right from the embedded content. The feature is rolling out slowly, with CNN, Huffington Post, Bleacher Report, PEOPLE and Mashable the first to have it turned on for their accounts. Facebook promises that broader availability will be coming soon, but it my be awhile before personal accounts can start embedding public posts all over the web.
