Officials are trying to determine if the deaths of six dolphins along the New Jersey shore in one week are linked to commercial fishing.
The first washed up on Long Beach Township on July 18. Two were found in Holgate and Barnegat Light on Monday. Two more turned up on Wednesday in Holgate and Ocean City. The last was found in Ship Bottom on Thursday.
Bob Schoelkopf of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center tells The Press of Atlantic City one dolphin had a knife wound running from its neck down its stomach. Two others showed signs of being ensnared in a fishing net.
The University of Texas San Antonio has extended the contract of head coach Brooks Thompson through the 2016-17 season, the school announced on Friday.
The 43-year old Thompson has helmed the Roadrunners for seven seasons and has accumulated a record of 103-111 during that time, including an NCAA Tournament appearance during the 2010-11 season that resulted in the school?s first-ever postseason victory with a win over Alabama State in the opening round.
UTSA is set to join Conference USA this season after spending only one season in the WAC.
?We are very appreciative of the job Brooks has done for this program,? ?UTSA Athletic Director Lynn Hickey said. ?When he arrived, he was faced with a tremendous challenge and he and his staff have turned things around both on and off the court. When you look at the things he has done with our APR and graduation rate and then see the quality and high character of the student- athletes he has brought to UTSA, we wanted to show support in return. Our recent conference moves have created another tremendous challenge for men?s basketball and this extension provides stability that is deserved as we enter a very competitive league in Conference USA.?
Last season the Roadrunners finished 9-21 and 3-14 in the WAC before joining Conference USA earlier this month.
(Reuters) - Facebook Inc shares opened 28 percent higher on Thursday after the company reported a huge jump in mobile advertising revenue, and analysts pointed to further growth from new advertising on Instagram and 15-second videos.
While still short of their IPO price of $38, the shares hit $34 -- a price not seen since their second day of trading in May last year.
At least 16 brokerages raised their price targets by as much as $9 per share -- in sharp contrast to a string of earlier downgrades amid fears it would struggle to make money from mobile advertising.
Revenue from smartphones and tablets made up almost half of total advertising revenue in the second quarter.
"FB's massive audience should be irresistible to brand advertisers as the company preps to launch 15-second video ads, which could be Facebook's next billion-dollar business," analysts at Jefferies & Co wrote in a note.
Instagram, Facebook's photo site with 130 million users, also looks ripe for the introduction of advertising and could be one of Facebook's biggest revenue drivers, the brokerage said.
Analysts at Morgan Stanley expect video ads to boost ad revenue by over 10 percent. Facebook is widely expected to launch the service in the fourth quarter.
At least 11 brokerages, including Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, RBC Capital Markets and Cantor Fitzgerald's have a target price at or above Facebook's IPO price of $38, a level the stock has never reached since its first day of trading in May last year.
INVESTORS HIT "LIKE"
The company has scrambled to address one of the main concerns weighing on the stock since its IPO, by developing mobile ads better suited to small smartphone screens that users increasingly use to access the service.
A year ago it had almost no mobile advertising. In the second quarter this made up 41 percent of total advertising, jumping from 30 percent in the first quarter.
Total revenue jumped by half from a year earlier.
"Facebook has discovered the formula to begin significantly extracting value from its 1.16 billion global users," said JMP Securities analyst Ronald Josey.
He raised his rating on the stock to "market outperform" from "market perform" and said the company was increasingly becoming a "must buy" for advertisers.
Evercore Partners and BTIG Research also raised their ratings on the stock.
GOOGLE LAGS
The quarter's results shows Facebook's massive market share gains from every internet company, including Google, Stifel Nicolaus analyst Jordan Rohan said.
As growing numbers of consumers take to their smartphones to access the Web, internet companies have struggled with the challenge of displaying ads on the smaller screens.
Last week, Google Inc reported second-quarter results short of Wall Street's estimates as weakening prices for its ads weighed on the bottom line.
While Susquehanna had expected Facebook's superior mobile ads display platform to attract advertising dollars away from the competition, the brokerage said it was surprised by the strength of growth.
"The Facebook versus Google debate will return to the investment community, after a year-long hiatus," Stifel Nicolaus analyst Jordan Rohan said.

It?s not entirely clear why, but Mercedes-Benz??the official patron of the PGA tour? and sponsor of pro golfer Adam Scott?s right breast?recently held a global contest that involved its fans submitting ideas for the ultimate golf cart. The results came in, were compiled, and apparently the overwhelming consensus among the entries was that Mercedes-leaning golfers yearn for a cart that rivals their car in terms of luxury. The three-pointed star guys presented the criteria to its designers in Carlsbad, California, who churned out the Vision Golf Cart concept you see here. It debuted it at this year?s British Open championship.
Loaded to the gills with luxury features, the Vision cart is less ?the Mercedes-Benz of golf carts? and more a Benz car that happens to look like a golf cart from Tron. As Gordon Wagoner, Benz?s VP of design, puts it, ?Why not [treat] a golf cart like a car, and [make] it a ?golf car?? ? Well, for starters, Volkswagen already makes a ?Golf car,? but we suppose that integrating carlike attributes into the ultimate golf cart makes some sense. Still, we?re struggling to see why Benz needed to design the Vision at all when a GLK-class can hold some clubs and seems capable of tackling a grass field.
Silly design brief aside, the all-electric Vision Golf Cart is an impressive bit of fantasy. Users can plug the Vision in to charge it, or it can be juiced up via the roof-mounted solar array?likely at a much slower, cloud-dependent pace. Electric hub motors mounted provide power. Inside, you won?t find a steering wheel or pedals; instead, a central joystick controls the vehicle. This is both bad and good, because it allows either front passenger to control the Vision. A series of touch-screen displays controls the air-conditioning and infotainment systems?for staying cool while streaming Caddyshack, natch?and the vehicle also packs heated and ventilated seats and Benz?s Airscarf neck-warmer technology. A head-up display is integrated into the windshield and can show golf course layouts, scores, and weather info.
A USB iPod/iPad dock lets occupants use their devices to play music through the Vision?s speakers, while a Bluetooth connection ensures captains of industry can still bark orders at their subordinates while away from the office. Golf-specific touches include a cooler?the beer is up to you?as well as cooled or heated cup holders. For golfers who aren?t so good at golfing, there?s an emergency ?fore? button that, when pressed, sends a warning signal ?to golf carts within the danger zone.? It isn?t clear how that zone is determined, or how Mercedes expects folks to override their instinctual pride and dignity to press that button. Since sometimes it rains on golf courses, rain-sensing automatic windshield wipers are included, as is a retractable lightning rod that is intended to be better at attracting electricity than nearby golfers? clubs. Snap-on, lightweight doors can be deployed to further battle the elements.
The Vision concept?s full complement of headlights, taillights, and signals means it is theoretically street legal, which is neat. For the more adventurous golfers out there, the LED headlights feature a ?floodlight? feature that conceivably allows for night stroking. Golfers who also fancy a bit of four-wheeling will appreciate the Vision?s control-arm suspension, which looks ready to take a few leaps over sand traps. We dig Benz?s attention to the Vision?s details, and also happen to think the thing looks sensational. Now we just need to take up golf.
Washington: Cellphones are ubiquitous and research shows that although most users think they have good mobile manners, many people report being irritated or annoyed by the use of the phones in public places.
Clearly there's a lack of understanding of what is and isn't acceptable in terms of cellphone etiquette.
Following is a list of do's and don'ts:
Most users think they have good mobile manners, but they don't. A quick guide to cellphone etiquette.
1. Do respect those who are with you. When you're engaged face-to-face with others, either in a meeting or a conversation, give them your complete and undivided attention. Avoid texting or taking calls. If a call is important, apologise and ask permission before accepting it.
2. Don't yell. The average person talks three times louder on a cellphone than they do in a face-to-face conversation. Always be mindful of your volume.
3. Do be a good dining companion. No one wants to be a captive audience to a third-party cellphone conversation, or to sit in silence while their dining companion texts with someone. Always silence and store your phone before being seated. Never put your mobile phone on the table.
4. Don't ignore universal quiet zones such as the theatre, religious places, the library, your daughter's dance recital and funerals.
5. Do let voicemail do its job. When you're in the company of others, let voicemail handle non-urgent calls.
6. Don't make staff wait. Whether it's your turn in line or time to order at the table, always make yourself available to the server. Making servers and other patrons wait for you to finish a personal phone call is never acceptable. If the call is important, step away from the table or get out of line.
7. Don't text and drive. There is no message that is so important.
8. Do keep arguments under wraps. Nobody can hear the person on the other end. All they are aware of is a one-sided screaming match a few feet away.
9. Don't forget to filter your language. A rule of thumb: If you wouldn't walk through a busy public place with a particular word or comment printed on your T-shirt, don't use it in cellphone conversations.
10. Do respect the personal space of others. When you must use your phone in public, try to keep at least 10 feet (three metres) between you and others.
11. Do exercise good international calling behaviour. The rules of cellphone etiquette vary from country to country.
Good cellphone etiquette is similar to common courtesy. Conversations and text exchanges have a tendency to distract people from what's happening in front of them. Cellphone users should be thoughtful, courteous and respect the people around them.
How many admissions officers are using the internet to screen applicants? What kind of online behavior affects a student?s admission to the college of their choice, and how can students prepare their online footprint for inspection??According to Kaplan Test Prep, who tracks such things, schools are ?increasingly discovering information on Facebook and Google that negatively impact applicants? acceptance chances.??In a 2012 survey, 27 percent of admissions officers said they use Google to screen applications, and 26 percent reported looking at Facebook pages. Google taps into not only Facebook, but a student?s activity on Twitter, Google Plus and personal online blogs. Use of online media among recruiters is even higher than admissions counselors, with 87 percent of colleges citing Facebook as one of their resources, 76 percent using Twitter, and 73 percent viewing a students??YouTube?clips.?
Privacy issues Does looking at students? online materials constitute an invasion of privacy? It?s easy to make a case that any material you have shared with the world via online publishing can no longer be called ?private.? However, 69 percent of schools that have crafted a policy on the matter are declaring social media off-limits. That said, with only 15 percent of schools having any policy whatsoever, that gives the vast majority of college recruiters complete freedom to surf your internet trail.
Online behavior that can affect your chances of admission What kind of online behavior affects your chances of admission to the college of your choice? Photos with alcoholic beverages, hate speech, descriptions or videos of violent or unruly behavior, public nudity, mentions of illegal drugs, or a pattern of posts that suggest a student might not mesh well with a diverse community are going to cause a recruiter to think twice, according to the Kaplan survey. On the other hand, posts that reflect a diverse range of interest, passion about social and political issues, and showcase the student as a respectful, thoughtful person can boost his chances of admission. Managing your online reputation There are ways to manage your online footprint. Before submitting college applications (or internship applications), run your name and hometown through a few popular search engines and scan the first couple of results pages. Do your best to clean up anything negative that comes up.
Use the privacy settings on your social media platforms to control which posts and photos are public. You can remove yourself from searches altogether, or leave your profile searchable but make your content visible only to friends. View your profile as a member of the public to see how you will appear to outsiders. Note: You can hide other photos, but if your profile is searchable, your profile picture and cover photos need to be clean.
Set your profile so others can?t tag you in photos without your permission, and don?t allow yourself to be tagged in public photos that show you as anything but a fine, upstanding young citizen.?
Blog posts and public forums are often searchable. If anything unflattering comes up, delete or edit those posts. Although it?s possible to locate deleted material online, college admissions counselors are rarely doing more than a quick skim of your activity.?
Managing a public image is an important lesson for incoming college students who will soon become young professionals. While only about a fourth of college admissions officers are using Google and social media to screen applicants, it is a common practice among employers.?

Our homes, offices and even gadgets are teeming with microbial life, but is it the kind we want? Ecologist Jessica Green tells Amy Maxmen why it's time for designers and architects to consider the ecosystems that thrive in and on their creations
You began your career as a civil engineer. How did you come to study microbes? When training as an engineer, I was applying fractal mathematics to model patterns of plant diversity. I was trying to answer questions in conservation biology, like "If you chop down a portion of the rainforest, how many species do you expect to lose"?
In 2001, a researcher in Australia asked if he could use these mathematical theories to make predictions about microbes in soil cores, and I ended up collaborating with his team. Microbes have remained interesting to me ever since. Even though they make up the majority of the tree of life, ...

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Biologists have worked out the details of a mechanism that leads undifferentiated blood stem cells to become macrophages -- immune cells that attack bacteria and other foreign pathogens. The process involves an unexpected cycle in which cell division slows, leading to an increased accumulation of a particular regulatory protein that in turn slows cell division further. The finding provides new insight into how stem cells are guided to generate one cell type as opposed to another.

?Senators are ready to offer students a better deal on their college loans this fall, but future classes could see higher interest rates.
The Senate could vote as early as Thursday on a bipartisan compromise that heads off a costly increase for returning students. The compromise could be a good deal for students through the 2015 academic year, but then interest rates are expected to climb above where they were when students left campus this spring.
Under the deal, all undergraduates this fall would borrow at 3.85 percent interest rates. Graduate students would have access to loans at 5.4 percent and parents would be able to borrow at 6.4 percent. Those rates would climb as the economy improves and it becomes more expensive for the government to borrow money.
The deal was described by Republican and Democratic aides who insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the ongoing negotiations by name.
Undergraduates last year borrowed at 3.4 percent or 6.8 percent, depending on their financial need. Graduate students had access to federal loans at 6.8 percent and parents borrowed at 7.9 percent.
The interest rates would be linked to the financial markets, but Democrats won a protection for students that rates would never climb higher than 8.25 percent for undergraduates. Graduate students would not pay rates higher than 9.5 percent and parents' rates would top out at 10.5 percent.
The bipartisan agreement is expected to be the final in a string of efforts that have emerged from near constant work to undo a rate hike that took hold for subsidized Stafford loans on July 1. Rates for new subsidized Stafford loans doubled from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent, adding roughly $2,600 to students' education costs.
Lawmakers from both parties called the increase senseless but differed on how to restore the lower rates. Republicans have pushed for a link between interest rates and the financial markets. Obama included that link in his budget proposal, as did House Republicans. Democrats balked, saying it could produce government profits on the backs of borrowers if rates continued to climb.
Leaders from both parties, however, recognized the potential to be blamed for the added costs in the 2014 elections if nothing were done.
Senate aides said a vote on the agreement could come as early as Thursday, although it could be pushed back to the middle of next week.
The House has already passed student loan legislation that also links interest rates to the 10-year Treasury note. The differences between the Senate and House versions are expected to be resolved before students return to campus this fall, and Obama is expected to sign the bill.
Few students had borrowed for fall classes. Students typically do not take out loans until just before they return to campus, and lawmakers have until the August recess to restore the lower rates. The students who had borrowed for summer programs since July 1 would have their rates retroactively reduced.
The deal was estimated to reduce the deficit by $715 million over the next decade.
Lawmakers and their top aides have been tinkering with various proposals ? nudging here, trimming there ? trying to find a deal that avoids added red ink for students and the government alike.
Democrats and Republicans met with Obama and Vice President Joe Biden on Tuesday at the White House. An outline of an agreement seemed to be taking shape Tuesday, with follow-up meetings Wednesday in Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin's office yielding a final agreement.
Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Republican Sen. Richard Burr of North Carolina were the main negotiators, with Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee and Durbin filling the role of mediators.
